Google Maps Gets A Design Overhaul: New Icons and Colors
Google Maps is the most popular mapping app when it comes to smartphones. Used by millions of users almost on a daily basis, it is one of the most popular tools created by Google. It has been around for quite some time now, and recently got a major design overhaul. With this new update to the look and feel of Google Maps, Google has decided to debut new icons and colors. These new additions to the app are expected to help the users find places faster. Let us take a closer look at all that’s new:
The Driving, Navigation, Transit and Explore modes have all been updated to provide the most relevant information at one glance. Basically, Google’s purpose with this is that while you are using public transit, there is some information that might not be as relevant but there are other places which you must see around you. Basically, you will see more petrol pumps while you’re driving and more train stations and bus stands when you’re on transit.
New Color Coding
Google has now introduced a new color coding system which will immediately let the users know which kind of places are nearby. For example if you’re looking for a place which serves food and drink, you’ll know you’re looking for orange colored places. If you’re looking for a doctor or a hospital, you need to look for a pink color on the map. In the image above, you can see various colors along with what they represent.
Google Maps now gets new icons – featuring a dedicated icon for each specific kind of a place you are looking for! This makes it even quicker to identify what kind of a building is in the vicinity without having to zoom in and tap on the place to look for more details. Below we share the complete list of new icons making their debut on this updated version of Google Maps:
