The reason is Google Drive will automatically convert your file into Word format when you click on the download button. For this, you have to follow these steps:
Go to Google Drive.
Right-click on the file.
Scroll down and look for the Download button.
Click on that button and your file will start downloading.
It depends on your choice either you want a single conversion or batch conversion, these methods will help you do both. A tip I would like to add is when uploading multiple files to Google Drive, just select all and drop them directly in the upload window. It easier to upload and convert this way.
