A Quick Guide to Add Page Numbers in Google Docs

Google Docs automatically format all documents with separate pages, unless you make it pageless yourself. However, it doesn’t add page numbers, which can be very useful for long documents. You can easily tell others where specific content is by mentioning the page number (linking to a section helps too). It also greatly helps with printing documents as you can keep track of physical pages.
Thankfully, Google Docs has dedicated options to add page numbers to the header or footer of documents and easily customize how they are displayed. Today, I’ll show you how to add page numbers in Google Docs and customize them.
Add Page Numbers in Google Docs
It doesn’t matter whether it’s a new document or an already written one. When you’ll add the page numbers they will automatically apply to all pages and the newly added pages too. Here’s how to do it:
Click on the Insert menu at the top and hover the mouse cursor over the Page numbers option. This will open 4 preset methods to add page numbers. 2 of the methods lets you add page number in the header and footer, and the other two lets you add them in the header and footer but skip the first page.

If you want a bit more control, then click on More options instead. Here you can configure from which page the numbering should start and at which number the page numbering should start. And Of course, you can decide whether it should be in the header or footer.

Once the page numbers are added you can manually change the numbers by double clicking on them. You can also change the number’s position from right to middle or left.

If you want to remove the page numbers, then double-click on the first page’s number and use the backspace key to remove it. This will automatically remove numbering on all pages.
Tip: Even though the main page number options don’t let you do this, you can also add page numbers in both header and footer at the same time. All you have to do is repeat the process twice, the first time select the header, and the second time the footer.
Wrapping Up
Numbering the pages in Google Docs is definitely a great way to organize long documents. Unfortunately, you can’t make this option default for all documents, so you’ll have to go through the above process for every document you want to add page numbers to. I am sure it won’t be much of a problem since it only takes a few clicks to add page numbers in Google Docs.
