How To Blur Faces in a Video on Android

Video editing is usually considered a complex job and might require a skilled person. But modern video editing software tools have made the task of video editing very easy. Gone are the days when one required powerful personal computers to accomplish video editing. With advancements in hardware and software. It is now even possible to use your Android phone to do some basic video and photo editing.

Capturing videos with a phone and sharing them online is pretty common nowadays. To share videos over the Internet without any privacy concerns, we might need to blur faces, certain objects, or text in videos. Android has dozens of apps that can be used to blur selected parts of your video in a few easy steps. In this article, I am going to explain how to blur faces selectively step-by-step in a video using an Android app called PutMask. So let’s get started.

How to use PutMask app

Step 1: To start, go ahead, download and install the “PutMask” app from Google Play Store, and double-tap to open it.

Step 2: When you run this app for the first time, it will ask you for your permission to access local folders of pictures and videos. Tap on “Allow” to grant these permissions.

Step 3: In the main interface of the app, double-tap the “Select from Gallery” option to display a list of storage locations at the bottom of the screen.

Step 4: Tap on the “Video Files” option to explore the video file you want to edit.
Step 5: Locate the required video and long tap on it to select it, and then tap on the “ok” button at the bottom of the screen.
Step 6: A welcome message from the app will appear for first-time users, click on the “OK” to continue. The app will import the video as frames and display them in the video editing timeline.
Step 7: Tap on the “CONTINUE” button towards the bottom right of the screen.
Step 8: Right above the video frames, select the “Face Track” option and then tap on the “Detect Faces” option at the bottom left of the screen.
Step 9: The app will search for faces in the video and report to you the number of faces it found. Tap on the “OK” button to continue.
Step 10: The app will automatically highlight the detected faces with the help of green squares.
Step 11: At this stage, you should choose which faces you want to blur in the video by taping the faces you want to blur and leaving the ones you don’t want to blur. To blur all faces in the video, tap on all the detected faces.
Step 12: Now tap the “Start Tracking” option at the bottom left of the screen.

Step 13: The app will start processing the video. When complete, tap on the “Export” button, the last option, towards the right above the video frames.

Step 14: Lastly, tap on the “EXPORT” button towards the bottom left of the screen. The app will start exporting and saving the video to the local storage as a new file and an exact copy of the original one but with blurred faces.

Wrapping up

In this article, I have explained step by step how you can blur faces in videos on your Android phone with the “PutMask” app easily and quickly. It must be noted that the face you want to blur must be selected from the frame in which the person appears for the very first time in the video. Also, the final video will have a watermark from “PutMask”. To remove the watermark, you might use another tool, or buy the premium version of the app.
